WASHINGTON — A Northern Virginia man is in custody after a stabbing in Frederick County, Maryland on Sunday that left a man dead and his wife seriously injured.
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office says the stabbing happened just before 8 p.m. at the Anna Prayer Counseling and Retreat Center, located along Peters Road in the Urbana area of the county, several miles south of Frederick.
“There was some type of service. There were more people there than just the victims and the suspect. I don’t know why it happened. I don’t know exactly what happened, what precipitated it. I don’t know what the motive is,” Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins tells WTOP.
“There was a pretty gruesome scene, pretty bloody. The stab and slashing injuries were pretty severe.”
Investigators say the man died at the scene, and his wife was in serious but stable condition at Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore.
The suspect called 911 after the stabbing and said he was waiting for police.
Jenkins says a 30-year-old Falls Church, Virginia man was taken into custody. He is uncertain what the relationship is between the suspect and the victims.
The suspect, who Jenkins said had been living at the church’s retreat center, was being questioned, but there is a language barrier.
Deputies are not looking for any additional suspects.
An individual is in custody at this time. There is no immediate threat to the community related to the stabbing.
