Va. standoff suspect in psychiatric care after a possible opioid overdose

WASHINGTON — A man who barricaded himself inside a Herndon, Virginia, home for 10 hours Sunday was later treated for a possible opioid overdose, authorities said. He’s now in psychiatric care.

Anthony Moaf, 21, surrendered to officers Sunday afternoon. While on the way to a psychiatric evaluation, Fairfax County police said, he “became unresponsive” and was taken to an emergency room instead.

Moaf was released from the hospital Monday morning and is now receiving treatment in a different facility. He’s been charged with reckless handling of a firearm.

Neighbors had been asked to shelter in place during Sunday’s standoff on Ladybank Lane, just west of the Fairfax County Parkway. It began around 4 a.m., when officers responded to a report of a man threatening to kill relatives.

Two adult family members made it out of the home safely.

Moaf, police said, threatened to shoot at first responders, and officers heard at least one gunshot in the house at around 6 a.m. A police robot and gas grenades were later deployed during the standoff.
