Police: Foot discovered in Va. backyard probably a bear paw

WASHINGTON — The discovery of what was believed to be a decomposed human foot in a Springfield, Virginia, backyard over the weekend triggered speculation on whose it was and what had happened to the person.

But on Thursday, the medical examiner’s office changed its mind.

On Thursday, the Fairfax County police said in a statement that the medical examiner has consulted with an anthropologist and believes the foot — found Saturday in a yard on Brunswick Street just off Backlick Road and south of I-495 — is in fact a bear paw.

The police said final confirmation will come in a few weeks.
