Police: Woman sexually assaulted behind Virginia shopping center

WASHINGTON — Police in Fairfax County hope security camera footage of a car will lead them to the man accused of sexually assaulting and robbing a woman in Springfield, Virginia.

It happened around 6 a.m. Wednesday, behind a shopping center on the 7000 block of Commerce Street. When Fairfax County Police arrived, a woman told officers she was robbed and sexually assaulted behind the shopping center.

The woman claims she was walking in the area when a man grabbed her and pulled her into a storage container behind a store. Inside the container, she said she was sexually assaulted and then robbed of her belongings. The woman ran home and called police.

Investigators obtained security camera footage from behind the shopping center and discovered that the man’s vehicle was caught on video. It’s described as a red sedan with a distinctive, discolored square on the vehicle’s driver’s side.

“We’re seeking the public’s assistance to see if anyone can identify the vehicle,” said Fairfax County officer Roger Henriquez.

The man is described as Hispanic, between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 140 to 160 pounds.

Police have been stepping up patrols in the area and spent part of the day on Thursday handing out fliers in the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131.
