WASHINGTON – A 19-year-old suspect is in custody after Fairfax County police say shots were fired at officers in Franconia Wednesday evening.
Police responded to a home in the 6200 block of Larkspur Drive in Franconia at about 5 p.m. for calls about a “suspicious event with the possibility of guns involved,” which turned out to stem from a domestic incident, says Fairfax County Police Officer Tawny Wright.
When police arrived, at least two gunshots came from inside the residence in the direction of the officers. No police officers were hit.
Police Chief Edwin Roessler says the suspect, identified as Syed Javid, was armed with a handgun and a long rifle when officers arrived, and initially refused commands to drop his weapons. The rifle turned out to be a replica, Roessler said.
The suspect barricaded himself inside the residence. Police negotiated with Javid, who eventually came out on his own, according to Wright. Officers fired beanbag and foam projectiles at Javid, and he was bitten by a police dog.
He was taken into custody around 6:20 p.m. Javid will undergo a psychiatric examination, Wright says. According to Roessler, Javid’s father was charged with assaulting him earlier in the day after an argument escalated.
During the evening incident involving Syed Javid, police established a perimeter and asked anyone in that immediate area to remain indoors – preferably a basement or the lowest area in the house.
“Whenever there is a threat of a firearm or sometimes people threaten they are going to blow something up or burn something , we try to look out for the neighbors and everyone in the community, so we definitely advised all the neighbors and people in the neighborhood to take cover and stay in a safe place until we resolved the matter,” Wright says.
