Police arrest suspect in Fairfax County burglary, sexual assault

WASHINGTON — Police have arrested the suspect in a Fairfax County burglary and assault earlier this week.

Fairfax County police say 22-year-old Edwin Ponce Martinez was arrested Friday night in the area of Lockheed Boulevard and Richmond Highway.

Around 11 p.m., officers noticed a vehicle parked on a nearby service road with multiple people sitting inside. According to police, the officers approached the vehicle to investigate the suspicious activity and immediately noticed one of the passengers was Martinez.

He was taken into custody and charged with burglary, rape and providing false identification to a law enforcement officer.

Police previously had two warrants for his arrest, charging him with burglary and rape.

Police say they believe Martinez broke into a home in the 8400 block of Blankenship Street in Alexandria around 2 a.m. on Feb. 20 and sexually assaulted a 51-year-old woman.

Police say the suspect threatened and assaulted the victim and then fled. The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police were searching for Martinez, who may go by the name “Javier.” The suspect identification came after police released a sketch of the suspect earlier this week.
