Correction: This story has been corrected to say that the officer was relieved of duty on April 9. He has since resigned from the department. Read the latest developments here.

WASHINGTON — A veteran of the Fairfax County Police Department was relieved of duty Thursday following an investigation involving child pornography.

It began with a tip to the police department from National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The tip claimed that child porn was uploaded from a home in the county to a social media and blogging website. Investigators with the Major Crimes Division’s Child Exploitation Unit started an investigation on Monday and discovered on Wednesday that the home belonged to an officer who worked in an administrative position at police headquarters.

The officer’s name was not released. The officer has 15 years of service with Fairfax County Police.

The department said in a press release that the criminal investigation is ongoing. An administrative investigation will also take place. So far, the officer has not been charged.
