Which films will deepen your appreciation for those who have sacrificed everything?
6. ‘The Deer Hunter’ (1978)
Michael Cimino’s Best Picture features one of the most intense scenes in any movie: Robert DeNiro and Christopher Walken forced to play Russian roulette against each other in a Viet Cong prison. While the film is seared in our movie memories, the film as a whole spends little time in Vietnam. It’s mostly concerned with the troops lives before the war — going deer hunting and shooting pool during a raucous bachelor party, then unable to pull the trigger on a deer after pulling countless triggers on human combatants in war. Few films study the mental and physical effects of war as cleverly and symbolically as this one. It’s also the last film with Meryl Streep and boyfriend John Cazale before his untimely death.
