WASHINGTON — D.C. officials are visiting some of the District’s most hazardous intersections in order to make them safer.
Early Wednesday, D.C. Councilwoman Mary M. Cheh, who represents Ward 3, was at Wisconsin Avenue and Albemarle Street in Northwest — one of the most dangerous intersections in the ward, according to the District Department of Transportation. Cheh leads the council’s transportation committee.
“We’ve brought out representatives of the community and representatives of DDOT,” Cheh said. “What we want to see is whether there are any things, physically, that can be done to make this safer.”
There were 53 crashes at that intersection between 2013 and 2015, according to figures from DDOT. The intersection is near the Tenleytown Metrorail station.
“Wisconsin Avenue is a congested place, but this is also right at a Metro station, so there are a lot of people walking and crossing the street,” said Sam Zimbabwe, associate director for planning at DDOT.
“We’re looking at ways to, maybe, change the signal timing, change turn restrictions or other things like that that can help reduce what we’re seeing in the crash numbers,” Zimbabwe said.
Cheh planned to stop at the other dangerous intersections in Ward 3: Connecticut Avenue and Porter Street; and 39th and Van Ness streets.
