Community input sought in search for new DCPS head

WASHINGTON — The search is on for a new leader of D.C. Public Schools as Chancellor Kaya Henderson prepares to step down.

The public is invited to get involved during a series of public forums starting Tuesday night.

Over the next three weeks, the DCPS Rising Leadership Committee will host community meetings to discuss potential candidates and get feedback from the community:

  • Tuesday, Aug. 30, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Roosevelt High School, 4301 13th St. NW
  • Wednesday, Sept. 7, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Eastern High School, 1700 East Capitol St. NE
  • Wednesday, Sept. 14, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Savoy Elementary School, 2400 Shannon Place SE

After the selection process is over, the committee will provide D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser with its final recommendation.

Henderson will resign at the end of September after nearly six years on the job.

John Davis, the current chief of schools, will become interim chancellor until the mayor finds a permanent replacement.
