WASHINGTON — Authorities say a man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting has been arrested after leading police on a chase through the city.
The U.S. Park Police and the Metropolitan Police Department say the pursuit began Friday when a park police officer on his way to work spotted an erratic driver on Howard Road SE.
WTOP’s television news partner, NBC Washington, reports that after running the car’s license plate number, the officer found that it was wanted in connection with the Feb. 22 slaying of 21-year-old Deandre Sibblies.
Authorities say the officer tried to stop the driver, who took off, beginning the 5-mile chase through the District.
The pursuit continued throughout the city before ending in a crash. Police say one person was hurt as the man slammed into multiple cars.
The suspect led officers on a brief foot pursuit after the crash, hiding under the wooden deck of a home when police found him. Police said the suspect assaulted an officer as he was being arrested.
He was then taken into custody and charged with assault on a police officer. His identity has not yet been released.
The civilian the driver hit was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A Park Police officer also had minor injuries.
