WASHINGTON — Water service has been fully restored at Howard University Hospital after a pipe broke in its basement early Monday morning.
The water pipe ruptured at 3:30 a.m. in the basement of the main hospital building. Spokesman Sholnn Freeman said hospital staff moved eight patients from the critical care unit — in the basement — to another critical care area without incident.
Emergency ambulances are being re-directed to other medical facilities. Endoscopy, surgical procedures, and radiation oncology services at the hospital remain unavailable. Those will be re-directed to other area health care providers until further notice.
Emergency services for walk-in patients resumed at 7 p.m., Freeman said, and other services are expected to resume normal operations on Tuesday.
Staff at the hospital will continue to update patients with information about upcoming appointments. Patients with any questions are encouraged to contact their respective physicians’ offices.
Howard University Hospital is still open. All staff is expected to report to work on time.
