17-year-old accused of fatal Metro shooting ordered held without bond

WASHINGTON — A 17-year-old boy accused of gunning down a 15-year-old at the Deanwood Metro station over the weekend was ordered held without bond Tuesday.

Devante Washington, a 15-year-old D.C. resident, was shot on a platform at the station at about 4 p.m. Saturday. The police say Washington was involved in a conversation that escalated into an argument. He died later at a hospital.

During the 17-year-old suspect’s arraignment hearing Tuesday afternoon, Magistrate Judge Renee Raymond says she found “substantial probability” that the suspect is dangerous. She ordered him held without bond until his next court date on April 22.

When the suspect was brought into the courtroom Tuesday, Washington’s mother cried out, “that’s him” and then fell into sobs.

After the hearing, Washington’s grandfather, Victor Leonard said the suspect “committed a senseless crime.”

“I’m surprised to see how young he was. To me, he looked like he didn’t have a care,” Leonard said.

Prosecutor Glenn Kirchner says “this case gives new meaning to the word senseless.”

Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier said at a news conference Tuesday that it would seek to charge the 17-year-old as an adult, and that charges would include second-degree murder.
