WASHINGTON — D.C. Police may have brought down the curtain on a two-month string of robberies of D.C. cab drivers.
Anthony Jones, a 19-year-old of Southeast D.C., is charged with robbing eight cab drivers since Oct. 1 — the last one on Tuesday, Nov. 24.
It was an armed robbery on Nov. 22 that led police to Jones.
He jumped in the back seat of a green and white Enviro cab that had just dropped off a customer at the Comfort Inn in Springfield, Virginia, according to court documents. The documents say Jones handed the driver a business card with his destination — his Southeast D.C. address — written on the back.
Near his home, police say Jones pulled a gun and demanded the driver’s cash. Jones’ image was captured on hotel surveillance video and police say the driver identified him.
Jones was taken into custody Wednesday. Court documents say police located Jones at the Southeast D.C. address written on the back of the business card.
Police say the string of cab driver robberies began October first when Jones grabbed money and ran near Mississippi Avenue and 6th Street in Southeast.
The next day, police say he pulled two robberies — one in the morning in Southeast and one at night near 11th Street and Florida Avenue in Northwest.
Within weeks, police say Jones was using a gun to rob three cabbies in four days in the same two areas.
A D.C. Superior Court judge has determined Jones should be held behind bars until his preliminary hearing which is scheduled Dec. 3.
