WASHINGTON — A weekend of lawlessness saw at least eight robberies and a shooting on Capitol Hill, some within blocks of each other.
Police are looking for a group of teenagers believed responsible for two and possibly three purse snatchings.
Using a dark blue minivan as their getaway vehicle, groups of teenage boys are believed responsible for two Sunday purse snatchings along A Street Northeast: one at about 1 p.m. at 7th Street near the World Mission Society Church of God church; another shortly before 8 p.m. on 8th Street.
A group of teenagers also ran away from a purse snatching just south of East Capitol Street and Lincoln Park, on 12th Street Southeast, about 9:30 p.m. Friday.
According to The Hill Now, D.C. police also are investigating two armed robberies north of Lincoln Park near 13th and Maryland Avenue Northeast early Saturday, as well as other Capitol Hill weekend robberies and a shooting at 12th and G streets Southeast about 9:30 p.m. Saturday that the victim is expected to survive.
Tim Rutten, who has been in the area for 13 years, calls the robberies, particularly the one near the church, “troubling,” as well as surprising: “This is a very well-traveled throroughfare to Eastern Market, to the Metro, so I’m surprised that something happened.”
Gaylea Shultz, who lives in the area, says the robbery near the church was caught on camera.
