WASHINGTON – The man accused in the deaths of four people in Northwest Washington last month has a cousin who was fired from the company owned by one of the people killed.
Daron Wint, the suspect, worked at American Iron Works from 2003 to 2005. CNN reports that Wint’s cousin also worked there until he was fired in 2005. Sources tell CNN that the cousin then threatened to burn the place down. At the time, the company got a restraining order barring the cousin from the premises.
Police believe Wint killed Savvas Savopoulos; his wife, Amy; their 10-year-old son, Philip; and their housekeeper, Vera Figueroa, inside the family’s house.
CNN also reports that Wint, who was born in Guyana, was in danger of losing his green card because of prior arrests.
D.C. police tell CNN that Wint’s fingerprints were run through the FBI database in March.
Wint was arrested on March 23 for receiving stolen property and was additionally charged with using a false name at the time of his arrest.
Officials tell CNN that Immigration and Customs Enforcement were supposed to be notified, but they weren’t.
“If Daron Wint was arrested in March and (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) never received those fingerprints until he’s arrested for quadruple homicide, it’s an indicator there’s a breakdown in system to me,” former ICE special agent John Torres says.
CNN has interviews with former co-workers and relatives of Wint, all of which are part of a special report that will air 9:30 p.m., Tuesday.
