Streets reopen after police response near Air and Space Museum

(1/5)

WASHINGTON — A large police response in the 600 block of Maryland Avenue SW blocked streets just south of the National Mall near the Air and Space Museum Sunday evening.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to what NBC4’s Darcy Spencer says was originally a report of trouble. One threat was reportedly that a man claimed to have a gun and a bomb; the other, that a man was armed.

Spencer says sources at the scene told her there were threats phoned in. Everything was cleared by 8:30 p.m., but officials did not say exactly what had happened.

D.C. Police and Department of Homeland Security police were among the agencies on the scene, along with the U.S. Park Police. Earlier in the day, Metro Transit Police had also responded.

Spencer reports heavily armed officers entered a large building near 6th Street and Maryland Avenue SW. One man was briefly detained and handcuffed, but was released when it was determined he was a worker in the building legitimately, NBC4 reports.

No additional information has been released at this time.
