WASHINGTON — On Saturday, a funeral was held for a local community reporter who was gunned down in Southeast Washington.

Charnice Milton was being used as a human shield when she was shot and killed May 27 while returning home from covering a story. She worked for Capital Community News, a local news outlet. Milton was apparently caught in the crossfire of a gang shootout.

Her funeral was held at the Living Word Church in Southwest Washington. The church was packed and her parents were in the front, near her casket, being consoled by others.

Although this was a celebration of Milton’s life, there was heaviness in the air.

Some who attended the church service complained about roving gangs on dirt bikes not being stopped by the police. They fear things could get worse as the summer progresses.

Metropolitan Police is offering a reward of up to $25,000 in connection with finding and prosecuting her killer. Call (202) 645-9600 or text tips to 50411.
