Suspect arrested in assault of 69-year-old man at Metro station

WASHINGTON – A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the assault of a 69-year-old man at the Eastern Market Metro station last month.

Elijah J. Smith was arrested Monday night, according to Metro Transit Police. Police had been looking for Smith since the attack on April 24, and had filed a felony assault charge against him.

Police say Smith spit on the 69-year-old man and punched him three times, causing him to collapse near the top of the escalator. Leading up to the assault, police say Smith pushed the man as they exited a train, and had a verbal dispute on the escalator.

The 69-year-old man was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Last week, police said Smith could face an enhanced sentence because of the victim’s age.
