Before the big game, local homeless kitchen offers Super Bowl predictions

WASHINGTON — On Sunday, a group of people without homes offered their predictions for Super Bowl 49.

At a local soup kitchen for the homeless — the Bread of Life Ministries Soup Kitchen in Northwest; also known as the “4th Street Seventh-day Adventist Vegetarian Soup Kitchen” — they were talking football while being served breakfast on Sunday morning.

Jesse and James, who are homeless, were making their picks for the big game.  James was proud to tell those in the dining room that he’s a Dallas Cowboy fan. “So I don’t have a preference. But I do think the New England Patriots will win.”

Meanwhile, Jesse went with Seattle.

Louis Williams and Tijuana Griffin run the soup kitchen. “We feed the homeless, but we also have fun here as well, so we talk about who’s going to win,” Williams says.

Lloyd, a volunteer who was manning the grill, made his prediction.

“Seattle, there’s no doubt.”

Why the Seahawks? “Because the quarterback is from Virginia.”

Russell Wilson grew up in Richmond.

Those who run the soup kitchen say things are tough right now and they need food and monetary donations.

They’re also in the process of trying to raise $10,000 to fix some of the rooms upstairs. The church (Fourth Street –Friendship Seventh-day Adventist Church) has been serving the homeless for about 40 years.  The soup kitchen is in one building and the church is next door in a separate building at 1611 4th Street NW Washington, D.C.

If you want more information on making a donation, you can call the church at 202 797-9255.
