WASHINGTON —With many federal and municipal workers sleeping in on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, officials aren’t anticipating heavy volumes of traffic. Those who venture out will likely have an easier commute.
All federal and local government offices are closed, so are post offices.
Transportation officials say a few traffic changes will take effect during the holiday:
- On the interstates, HOV restrictions will be lifted on Interstate 395, Interstate 66 and the Dulles Toll Road.
- The HOT rules for the Interstate 95 Express Lanes will not change, and tolls will be in effect for solo drivers. Carpoolers can travel for free with an E-ZPass Flex. HOV restrictions will remain in effect on Route 50, between Bowie, Maryland and the Beltway.
- In the District, parking meter enforcement will not take place. Residential zone parking and rush-hour lane restrictions will also be lifted.
- The reversible lanes on Connecticut Avenue through Cleveland Park and Woodley Park will be open in the off-peak directions all day. Three lanes will be open to inbound and outbound traffic on 16th Street NW all day.
- The Rock Creek Parkway, the Clara Barton Parkway and Canal Road will be open to two-way traffic. Two lanes will be open to outbound traffic on Chain Bridge all day long.
A few transit changes will also take effect on Monday:
- Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. and close at midnight. Trains are scheduled to run on a Saturday schedule. Metro estimates there will be 12-minute gaps in between trains with no scheduled track work.
- VRE will not on Monday
- All three MARC Rail lines will operate on an “S” weekday schedule.
- Metro buses will run on a Saturday supplemental schedule across the region.
- In Maryland, Montgomery County Ride On buses will run on a modified holiday schedule, with several routes running less frequently.
- In Arlington, Virginia, ART bus lines 41, 42, 45, 51, 55, 77 and 87 will run on Saturday schedules. All other ART routes will not operate.
- In Fairfax County, Virginia, most Fairfax Connector buses will run as scheduled but the 335, 393, 394, 395, 432, 494, 495, 585, 599, 724, 734, and 985 lines will not operate at all.
