WASHINGTON — Starting Friday night, as many as three lanes will be shut down on a portion of Interstate 95/Interstate 495 at Richie Marlboro Road in Prince George’s County, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration announced.
The closures begin 9 p.m. Friday and continue into Monday morning. State officials said the lanes of I-95/I-495 will close in this order:
• A single left lane at 9 p.m. Friday
• Two lanes at 10 p.m. Friday
• Three lanes at 11 p.m. Friday, continuing through 7 a.m. Saturday
• Two lanes will remain closed through 5 a.m. Monday.
In addition, one lane in each direction of Ritchie Marlboro Road under I-95 will be closed between 9 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday. Crews may need to completely stop traffic for up to 15 minutes to protect motorists and workers while moving construction equipment into place, the SHA said in a news release.
Dave Buck, a spokesman for SHA, said the lane closures were needed to repair the driving surface on the bridge, a continuation of work done last weekend. State officials have asked travelers to avoid the area, if possible.
“With a double-lane closure on the Beltway on a Saturday, there’s clearly going to be some delays this weekend,” Buck tells WTOP.
