The perfect gift for the fit (or wannabe fit) person on your list

This year, consider giving the gift of fitness. You won’t have to worry about returns, whether the item fits or that the recipient will sigh and say, “I already have one of these.” Fitness is a universal gift we all need.

You don’t have to buy gadgets or equipment to give the gift of fitness. Those products can be difficult and pricey, and they’re typically specific to one sport or activity. Instead, give the gift of time — and don’t forget to give it to yourself, too.

Here’s how to treat the various people on your list to fitness:

Kids

Who needs another plastic toy? What kids really value is spending time with their families. Why not buy a pass to a dance class or the entry fee for a race you can run together, perhaps in a fun destination? You could also “gift” a walk in a nature preserve, an afternoon of canoeing in a nearby river or a round of golf at a local par 3 course. These types of gifts also have a deeper meaning: They help kids understand the importance of taking care of their bodies, and they show that you care about taking care of yours.

The Novice

Are you buying a gift for someone who is new to exercise or who hasn’t exercised in a while? A gift card to a sporting goods store is a smart purchase. Another idea is to purchase a day pass for the local YMCA, community center or pool. These facilities offer great classes and are very reasonably priced.

Such pay-as-you-go options are great gifts for people who are new to exercise because they allow recipients to try out different fitness opportunities without the burden of being locked into a long-term contract. Just be sure you choose a facility close to the person’s home, since the farther people have to travel to exercise, the less likely they’ll be to actually do it.

Another great idea is to buy a set of personal training sessions — just make sure the trainer is certified, has good references and offers personalized instruction. These sessions can really help boost motivation and confidence, especially in people who are not as familiar with exercise.

The Intermediate

Looking for a gift for someone who already values fitness? Make a date out of trying a new class together. Many people want to try new classes but are held back by the unfamiliarity. If you go together, it’s not as scary or awkward. Or, print out certificates for morning meet-ups with post-activity coffee. Agreeing to be a training partner for a friend or family member is a great gift that also benefits the giver!

The Expert

Need ideas for people who are extremely invested in health and fitness? Purchase a gift that supports their efforts. How about reflective gear now that the days are getting shorter to help keep them safe when they exercise outdoors? Or free babysitting that allows them to go to fitness classes without having to worry about their children? Or a gift certificate for a sports massage, pedicure or a celebratory dinner in a location where they’re planning their next race?

A no-fail alternative is to find gear or clothing from the person’s favorite event or race. Many athletes appreciate this sentimental token of their accomplishments. This gift lets them know you value their dedication — and you’ll get extra points for paying such close attention to their passions.
