DC ranks No. 1 for business school grads

WASHINGTON — For recent business school grads, the best opportunities can be found in the D.C. metro area, according to moving advice and information site Move.org.

The District was ranked No. 1 on the website’s list of the 10 best cities for business graduates to move to.

Sage Evans, with Move.org, said D.C. gets to the top of the list for several key reasons, including:

  • The unemployment rate;
  • The number of job openings per 1,000 in a business or financial occupation; and
  • The average cost of living and hourly wage to get a livability score.

The rankings did not include a category for cost of living. Instead, the livability score takes into consideration how much recent business graduates get paid as well as the local cost of living, Evans told WTOP.

“Based on average living expenses and the median hourly wage, the discretionary income leftover is 64 percent of income (in Washington) using those averages,” Evans said, and that’s a healthy number for discretionary income.

D.C. boasts the nation’s highest median hourly wage for business grads, at $42.74. That’s close to a $90,000-a-year job straight out of school, and helps rank the District in second place for livability.

D.C. also ranks No. 1 for open positions in business and finance on Move.org’s list.

Other top cities on the best for business grads list are Denver, Boston, Seattle and Minneapolis.
