Children’s National breaks ground on Prince George’s Co. pediatric center

WASHINGTON — Children’s National Health System plans a 60,000-square-foot pediatric outpatient and specialty care center at Woodmore Towne Centre at Glenarden in Prince George’s County and held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the center Wednesday.

It is expected to open to patients in 2020.

Children’s National served 24,000 patients in Prince George’s County at existing facilities in 2016.

The new facility allows Children’s National to expand its health care services in Prince George’s County. It will provide a broad range of specialty medical services, including cardiology, neurology, genetics, allergy, sports medicine and orthopedics. It also will have outpatient surgery, MRI and rehabilitation services.

“Children’s National has long been committed to the health and well-being of children and families in Prince George’s County,” said Children’s National President and CEO Kurt Newman.

“The county’s kids comprise a significant portion of our patients, and we’ve continued to expand our physical presence there.”

The University of Maryland Medical System broke ground last week on its $543 million University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center nearby in Largo.

Children’s National is in big expansion mode.

Five new community-based facilities have recently opened in Howard County, Maryland, in Annapolis, at a new Northwest D.C. location in Friendship Heights and in two Southeast D.C. areas, Anacostia and Ft. David.

It is also opening specialty care services at a new location in Frederick, Maryland, and in the repurposed, historic Takoma Theatre, and a new primary pediatric care location in Columbia Heights.

Woodmore Towne Centre opened in 2010. It is anchored by a Wegmans grocery store, Costco, JC Penny, Best Buy and Petco.

The 140-acre, 70,000-square foot existing mixed use development is at the interchange of Interstate 495, Landover Road and Maryland Route 202.

It is owned by Petrie Richardson Ventures, whose other area properties include Ellsworth Place in Silver Spring.
