Struggling Newseum a TripAdvisor trending attraction

WASHINGTON — TripAdvisor’s Seasonal Attractions Trend Index, based on year-over-year search activity, puts D.C.’s Newseum in the top 10.

The Newseum ranks No. 6 on the index, with a 20 percent increase in TripAdvisor searches from a year ago.

The Newseum already attracts more than 800,000 visitors a year, the most for any D.C. museum that charges an admission fee. But the Freedom Forum, the museum’s prime benefactor, has said it has been difficult to raise what it costs to operate the museum through admission fees, especially in a city full of free museums.

The Newseum is not self-sustaining, despite ticket sales and donations from individuals, foundations and companies. In August, the Freedom Forum said it would explore ways to address its financial struggles, including the possible sale of its Pennsylvania Avenue building.

Two other nearby attractions make TripAdvisor’s Trend Index.

Great Falls Park in McLean is No. 15, with an 8 percent increase in Trip Advisor searches compared to a year ago. Luray Caverns, in Luray Virginia, saw a 7 percent increase.

Topping the list, based on a year-over-year increase in TripAdvisor searches, is Grand Canyon South Rim, up 45 percent.
