WASHINGTON — Lyft is taking on Uber’s long-standing black car service with its own luxury ride-hailing option.
Two options actually: Lyft Lux and Lyft Lux SUV have launched in Washington and Baltimore, along with a handful of other cities.
The company is promoting the options as a better choice for a business traveler, or a special occasion.
For Lyft drivers who want to drive Lyft Lux or Lyft Lux SUV, the bar is set a bit higher. They must drive a vehicle that is 2011 or newer, black, in excellent condition and with “leather or leather-like” seats. For Lyft Lux SUV, the vehicle must comfortably seat six passengers.
The drivers also must maintain a rating of 4.7 stars or higher in order to receive Lyft Lux requests.
Lyft Lux drivers will earn more, Lyft said.
Lyft Lux in Washington costs $3.40 per mile plus a $7 base fare, compared with $1.02 per mile and a $1.15 base fare for a standard Lyft ride, according to the Lyft website.
Lyft Lux SUV is $3.65 per mile plus a $14 base fare.
