‘Chia poll’ predicted election outcome

WASHINGTON — Perhaps the only presidential election poll to get the outcome right had nothing to do with newspapers, networks or online surveys.

The “Chia poll” got it right.

Joseph Enterprises, maker of the Chia Pet line of terra-cotta figures, says its poll based on the most recent sales figures through Nov. 5 showed Donald Trump ahead of Hillary Clinton. Sales of the Chia Trump outsold sales of the Chia Clinton by 77 percent to 23 percent.

It says those percentages were steady throughout the run-up to the election.

This is the second time the Chia poll has correctly predicted the winner of the presidential election.

In 2012, sales of Chia Obama and Chia Romney almost exactly matched results of the Electoral College percentages.

Chia Trump and Chia Clinton are both still for sale at Amazon and at Kmart and Target.

The Chia Pet was first introduced in 1977.

San Francisco-based Joseph Enterprises’ other iconic product introduced to America — this one in the 1980s — is “The Clapper.”
