WASHINGTON — Perhaps feeling the competitive pressure coming from MGM’s National Harbor casino late this year, Maryland Live! casino at Arundel Mills is embarking on a $200 million expansion.

Developer The Cordish Companies says expansion plans will include a 17-story hotel, called Live! Hotel. The addition will include 310 hotel rooms, an event center, meeting spaces, new restaurants, a day spa and salon and a 1,500-seat concert venue.

“The addition of our flagship Live! Hotel is just the latest investment we are making to ensure Maryland Live! continues to be the preferred choice for visitors seeking a world-class gaming and entertainment experience,” said Robert Norton, president of Cordish Global Gaming Group.

Expansion will include 1,000 additional parking spaces.

The project will create about 500 construction jobs, and an estimated 400 new jobs once the addition opens.

Cordish plans groundbreaking on the Maryland Live! expansion this fall. It is expected to open in late-2017.

Maryland’s five existing casinos generated $103.9 million in revenue in April, a record. Maryland Live! accounted for $57.8 million of that, up 13 percent from April 2014.
