Play dress-up with your pooch to benefit Northern Va. animal rescue

WASHINGTON — A charity art auction being held Saturday at Reagan National Airport offers an opportunity to play dress-up with your dog.

The PawCasso fundraiser, to be held in the original Terminal A historic lobby, bills itself as “a dog-friendly, elegant event.” It features original artwork from local artists to benefit Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, based in Arlington, Virginia.

“You can actually bring your dog,” Kate Brown said on behalf of the group. “There’s lots of goodies to buy, lots of great art to look at and buy, lots of things to eat and drink, live music — and Fido gets to be there with you.”

The Homeward Trails coalition of volunteers and foster homes throughout the Mid-Atlantic region rescues and transports animals from overcrowded kill shelters, the meat trade overseas and disaster areas such as hurricane-ravaged Texas, and works to get them into forever homes.

“Homeward Trails has this incredible network of people,” Brown said. “The network of people is just immense.”

The PawCasso silent auction features more than 100 donations that include items, services, events, vacation packages and gift certificates to various spas and restaurants. Live auction items include an African safari, private villa in Bali, box seats to a Redskins game and a Walt Disney World package.

As for the event’s name? It’s a combination of animal “paws” and the artist Picasso.

“There’s a sense of humor in it — which, everybody knows, if you love dogs and cats and animals you have to have a fair amount of a good sense of humor,” Brown said. “My dog is actually standing on the coffee table right now looking at me, and he’s not supposed to be doing that!”

The event is Saturday, Nov. 4, between 6 and 10 p.m. Tickets start at $75.
