ALEXANDRIA, Va. – On Sunday, Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille officially launched his write-in campaign to reclaim his office.
Euille announced his bid for the November election before a crowd of cheering supporters at Waterfront Park in Alexandria.
“I was born and raised here and I will not go quietly into the night — not when jobs, decent paychecks and the lifestyles of the people I love the most are at stake,” Euille said.
Euille has been mayor since 2003, but he lost the Democratic primary to Vice Mayor Allison Silberberg by 312 votes out of 13,500 cast in the three-way primary among Euille, Silberberg and Kerry Donley.
It’s too late for Euille to run as an independent. He promised to let people know before Labor Day whether he would officially launch a write-in campaign.
“This is not a flicker or flame. This is a fire,” Euille said. “People really, really want me to be a write-in candidate to provide an option for voters on November 3.”
After his public announcement on Sunday he said the next step would be putting his team together, rolling up their sleeves and knocking on doors.
Those pledging support for Euille include former City Councilman Lonnie Rich.
