Steve Rudin, 7News First Alert Meteorologist
Showers arrive by Wednesday morning and become more widespread through the day. Some thunderstorms are possible, but the severe threat continues to trend lower. Most guidance keeps the D.C. region outside higher-risk zones, meaning storms that do develop are more likely to bring brief downpours and gusty winds rather than anything widespread.
Rain continues into Thursday as a front pushes through, keeping conditions cool and damp, especially early. Combined rainfall from Wednesday into Thursday should generally total between a half inch and 1.25 inches. Cooler air filtering in should help stabilize the atmosphere, keeping the severe threat low.
Sunshine and drier air return Friday, bringing a quieter finish to the week with more comfortable temperatures and lower humidity.
7News First Alert Forecast
OVERNIGHT:
Partly Cloudy, Breezy
Lows: 63-67
Winds: Southwest 10-15, 20-30 mph
Still mild and a bit breezy through the evening hours. Skies gradually turn partly to mostly cloudy, and temperatures ease back through the 70s. Winds remain brisk out of the south with gusts 20 to 30 mph at times.
WEDNESDAY:
AM Rain, Isolated PM Shower
Highs: 70-75
Winds: Southwest 10-15, Gusts 25-30 mph
This is the weather change day. Showers become more likely through the morning, and that could slow the commute with wet roads, lower visibility, and more spray from traffic. It may not be raining moderately everywhere at daybreak, but the trend is toward more widespread rain as the morning goes on. By afternoon, showers continue and a few thunderstorms may develop, especially late in the day. Highs reach the mid to upper 70s, but it will feel more unsettled than warm and pleasant. Rainfall looks beneficial overall, with most areas picking up around a tenth to a quarter inch, locally higher in any thunderstorms along with gusts to 30 mph.
THURSDAY:
Cloudy & Cooler
Showers Possible
Highs: 57-62
Winds: North 5-10 mph
Thursday keeps the unsettled feel around, but it is also cooler and more gray. Showers are likely, especially during the morning, with another chance for showers and a few thunderstorms from late morning into the afternoon. Temperatures struggle compared to earlier in the week, with highs only in the mid 50s to low 60s. It is the kind of day where the umbrella stays close, even if it is not raining every minute. The steadiest rain should gradually taper later in the day, but clouds may be stubborn before the system fully pulls away.
FRIDAY:
Mostly Sunny
Highs: 65-70
Winds: Northwest 10-20 mph
Sunshine returns and it feels like a reset button. After a couple of damp, gray days, skies clear out and temperatures rebound into the mid to upper 60s. The air feels noticeably fresher with lower humidity and a light breeze. No rain expected, and no severe weather concerns. A nice stretch to dry things out and get back outside.
SATURDAY:
Mostly Cloudy, Showers
Highs: near 70
Winds: Southwest 10-20 mph
A mix of sun and clouds with temperatures climbing into the low to mid 70s. There is a chance of a passing shower, especially later in the morning into the afternoon, but it does not look like a washout. Just something to keep an eye on if there are outdoor plans.
SUNDAY:
Mostly Sunny
Highs: 80-85
Winds: Southwest 10-15 mph
Looking like the pick of the weekend. Sunshine returns with highs pushing close to 80. Comfortable humidity, light winds, and overall great conditions for any outdoor plans. A solid forecast for Mother’s Day.
