Rolling Stone settles with U.Va. dean who sued over discredited article

WASHINGTON — Rolling Stone magazine has settled a defamation lawsuit brought by a University of Virginia administrator over a now-discredited story about a sexual assault at a campus fraternity.

Nicole Eramo’s lawyer confirmed to WTOP the two parties settled the dispute amicably, but that the terms of the settlement are confidential.

Last November, a jury awarded Eramo, the university’s former dean of students, $3 million in the lawsuit. Earlier, the jury found the magazine and reporter Sabrina Erdely responsible for defamation against Eramo stemming from Erdely’s November 2014 article “A Rape on Campus.”

Rolling Stone had appealed the verdict.

The settlement now ends the case.

A separate lawsuit by a fraternity is still moving through the courts.

BuzzFeed was first to report settlement.
