Metro performance dips nearly across the board

WASHINGTON — Multiple smoke events, one deadly. Reports of bus driver attacks. A system in disrepair.

Metro has not had a good start to 2015. And it’s sharing its performance details with the public.

The escalator and elevator service has improved, but compared to last year’s first quarter, that’s about it at Metro.

In presenting the vitals report Thursday, Metro Performance Officer Andrea Burnside said rail service performance is “the lowest in recent memory.”

Plagued by an aging system, the weather was to blame for a lot of Metro’s woes — cracked rails, snow damage and limited bus service.

“There are a lot of weather events. A lot of things that would improve the reliability of the system really involve our purchase of the 7000 series rail cars,” says board member Harriet Tregoning.

Crime is also of concern. Burnside reported robberies, snatches and aggravated assaults increased on the system since last year.

Other findings in the report, customer satisfaction is down and customer injuries are up, which are attributed to slips on the ice.
