Race, charity walk to close downtown DC streets Saturday

WASHINGTON — A weekend race to support local police officers will close downtown D.C. streets Saturday morning and a nighttime charity walk to raise money for blood cancer research will close several streets later that evening.

The Race for the Badge 5K starts at 9 a.m. Saturday near the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in the Judiciary Square neighborhood and will close down a large section of 3rd Street on both sides of the National Mall.

Street closures associated with the race route also include parts of D Street SW, Maryland Avenue SW and Independence Avenue SW.

Traffic will be closed along the race route between 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The 400 block of F Street NW, where the race kicks off, will be closed to traffic starting at 4 a.m.

In a traffic advisory, D.C. police said drivers should consider alternative routes.

Meanwhile, the Light the Night Walk will close streets around Freedom Plaza all day Saturday. That includes Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 14th Street and 12th Street as well as 13th Street Northwest between Pennsylvania Avenue and E Street.

Later in the day, the numbered streets that intersect with E Street, running from 6th Street to 12th Street, will also be blocked off for the charity walk between Constitution and Pennsylvania. Those streets, along with parts of 3rd Street and 4th Street will be closed between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

That could cause some headaches for drivers making their way to the Verizon Center for the Washington Capitals hockey game, which starts at 7 p.m.
