WASHINGTON — Funeral arrangements have been announced for Jacai Colson — the Prince George’s County police officer who died from friendly fire in a shootout at the District III police station in Landover last weekend.
There will be two viewings: one Thursday, March 24 at Borgwardt Funeral Home in Beltsville, Maryland, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and the other on Friday, March 25 at First Baptist Church of Glenarden in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
After Friday’s viewing, there will be a memorial service at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden. It will begin at 11 a.m.
The funeral will take place Monday, March 28 at noon. Colson will be buried at Lawn Croft Cemetery in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania.
The viewing, memorial service and funeral are all private events at the family’s request.
On March 13, 28-year-old Colson responded to the police station in plainclothes in his unmarked police car to help during the barrage. He immediately began to fire at the shooter — identified as 22-year-old Michael Ford. But amid the chaos, Colson was hit.
Investigators believe that the “round that led to Detective Colson’s death” came from another Prince George’s County officer responding to the active shooter.
Three brothers have been charged in the gunfight, which police have described as an attempt by the suicidal Michael Ford, to provoke officers into killing him.
Police said Ford’s brothers aided him before and during the shootout and used their cellphones to record video of the gunfight. They also recorded video of Michael Ford offering a “last will and testament,” police said.
