Former Md. school aide pleads not guilty to federal child porn charges

GREENBELT, Md. — A former Prince George’s County school aide pleaded not guilty in federal court to exploiting children for the purpose of making pornography.

In cuffs, an orange jumpsuit and surrounded by U.S. Marshals, Deonte Carraway, 22, only spoke the words “yes sir” when responding to questions from Chief Magistrate Judge William Connelly in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland, Friday.

Between October 2015 and February 2016, Carraway is accused filming and engaging in sexual acts with the children, and encouraging the children to film themselves involved in sexual activity.

Caraway was indicted by a federal grand jury last week on 13 federal counts, which includes 11 victims who range in age from 9 to 12 years old. Carraway faces 30 years in prison for each count, if convicted.

In his initial appearance, it was determined that Carraway could not afford a defense team and the judge assigned Public Defenders  John Chamble and LaKeytria Felder to represent him.

In addition to the elementary school, Carraway also worked with children at the Theresa Banks Memorial Aquatic Center and at Glenarden Municipal Center where he led the Voices of Youth choir.

Carraway will remain in jail in Prince George’s County where he is being held on $1 million bond for numerous state charges in a related case.

A trial date has not been set in his federal case.
