Investigators: Fire on Metro train was arson

WASHINGTON — Agencies investigating a fire that broke out on a moving Metro train Monday evening have determined that it was set deliberately.

“Investigators determined the cause of the fire was arson,” says Mark Brady, spokesman for the Prince George’s County fire department.

After leaving the Morgan Boulevard Station, the train had to be evacuated as it approached the Addison Road Station before 8 p.m. There was smoke in the train and tunnel, but nobody was injured.

“The train was evacuated very safely,” Brady says.

The fire was put out by a quick-thinking Metro employee who rushed over with a fire extinguisher.

Investigators are still trying to track down the suspects. They believe two teenagers set the fire using paper.

“I know Metro was researching their database to see if their cameras captured any video,” Brady says.

The fire caused about $300 dollars in damage.
