Man dies after being pulled from icy pond

WASHINGTON – A man has died after firefighters pulled him from an icy pond Monday afternoon.

Prince George’s County Fire crews were called to Chaddsford Lake Drive in Brandywine around 3 p.m.

ABC7’s Richard Reeve tells WTOP that investigators are still trying to figure out how the man ended up in the water. “Initially, they thought this was a suicide call,” he said just before 11:30 p.m. Later, witnesses told fire personnel that they saw the man wandering around a footpath in the area and described the man as having fallen in, Reeve says.

He says the man was only described as in his 30s, wearing a hoodie.

“There is a very steep embankment on that side of the lake,” Reeve says. “We really don’t know if he lost his footing, had a heart issue, something like that.”

First, the fire department brought a pontoon boat, Reeve says, and eventually divers were brought in. After about 45 minutes, Reeve says, they found the man in waist- to neck-deep water. “Very milky, muddy water,” Reeve described the water. “Very hard to see down there.”

Prince George’s County Police say the man died shortly after he arrived at the hospital.

No additional information has been released at this time.
