The moment D.C.’s cheese lovers have been waiting for is finally here: GCDC, a restaurant devoted entirely to grilled cheese, opened Friday in downtown D.C., bringing all its ooey-gooey goodness to the dining masses.
GCDC (which stands for Grilled Cheese D.C.) is a fast-casual lunch spot by day and a wine, beer and cheese bar at night. It’s opening at 1730 Pennsylvania Ave. NW — just in time for National Grilled Cheese Day April 12. To celebrate, the restaurant will offer half-price beers and sandwiches for $5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The restaurant, which comes from father-and-son team Bruce and Steve Klores, serves traditional grilled cheeses and specialties such as the “kim-cheese-steak” with roast beef and kimchi, the grilled carbonara with goat cheese, leeks and pancetta, and buffalo blue with chicken, red onion, cheddar and blue cheese. There’s also a “grill your own” option where customers can pick their own combination of cheeses and other toppings.

Blue Sea Seafood: Cajun-influenced Blue Sea Seafood opened Wednesday in the Shirlington neighborhood of Arlington, filling a space long left vacant by the exit of Bear Rock Cafe. The restaurant’s menu features Louisiana-style dishes such as crawfish etouffee, pecan-crusted catfish and gator tots, along with more traditional dishes such as burgers, sandwiches and flounder meuniere. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily, serving until 10 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on Friday and Saturday.
Union Social: Train-themed restaurant Union Social will open in NoMa later this year, taking 5,600 square feet in the soon to open Elevation at Washington Gateway building at 100 Florida Ave. NE.
The restaurant is from restaurateur Reese Gardner, who also owns Cooperwood Tavern and Wilson Tavern in Arlington and Irish Whiskey Public House and The Mighty Pint in D.C. The restaurant’s design will incorporate transit-themed accents, including subway tiles, to play up its location near Union Station.
