WASHINGTON — The District’s famed cherry trees are expected to be at their peak bloom, with 70 percent of the trees flowering, between April 8 and April 12.

National Park Service officials made the bloom prediction Tuesday as organizers announced plans for this year’s National Cherry Blossom Festival.

The festival will run from March 20 to April 13 and will feature a wide variety of events celebrating the trees and Japanese culture. Among the events will be a film festival that features recent Japanese films.

This year’s festival also includes a fitness theme with activities planned around the city’s monuments.

Fireworks are planned for April 5, and the Cherry Blossom Parade will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12.

The cherry blossoms are a huge District attraction for not only tourists, but also locals who love to see the blooms.

This year marks the 102nd anniversary of the gift of the cherry blossom trees from Japan as a symbol of friendship with the United States.
