Chris Zimmerman announces his retirement Chris Zimmerman announces his retirement

Update at 3:45 p.m. — Zimmerman is retiring from the County Board. He will join Smart Growth America as Vice President of Economic Development.

Earlier: Arlington County Board member Chris Zimmerman will make an “important announcement” at 3:30 this afternoon, according to a county press release.

No word yet on what sort of announcement Zimmerman will be making on the day after election day. County officials were mum on details, saying only that it will be important and that County Board Chair Walter Tejada will also be in attendance.

Zimmerman skipped the traditional post-election Arlington County Democratic Committee lunch today, a source tells ARLnow.com.

A resident of the Douglas Park neighborhood off Columbia Pike, Zimmerman was first elected to the County Board in 1996. He survived a minor political controversy last year when it was revealed that he had done some consulting work for AECOM, a conglomerate that has had various contracts with Arlington County over the past few years, including some planning-related work for the streetcar project.

The announcement, at the Arlington County Board Room, is open to the public and will be broadcast on Arlington’s cable television channel and online.
