AAA: Gas Prices drop again. Could hit below $3

WASHINGTON – The price of gas continues to drop and predictions are that they will continue to fall for a while.

You can fill up your car in the D.C. area this week for an average of $3.56 for a gallon of regular unleaded, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

That’s down six cents from last weekend, and down 27 cents from the $3.83 average of a year ago.

“We expect a freefall in gasoline prices, but keep in mind that gasoline prices are still much higher than they have been most summers at this time,” says AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman John Townsend.

He adds that prices will continue to fall this summer unless there’s a refinery damaging hurricane or some other disruption in the distribution system.

“It is conceivable that in Virginia, for example, you may see gas prices below $3.00 and in some places in Virginia you’re looking at $3.15 already,” says AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman John Townsend.

The record price is $4.11 a gallon set back in July 2008.
