WASHINGTON – Whether you are going for a jog, walk or you’re a marathoner, you can’t run away from the dangers of the sun.
Studies show most athletes don’t like the smell and feel of sunscreen, but before you hit the trail, experts agree sun protection is key to avoiding burns and the possibility of skin cancer down the road.
Protecting your skin should be as important as choosing your running sneakers. Be sure and target vulnerable spots, such as the tops of your ears, lips, shoulders and head.
Make sure it’s at least SPF30 that protects against UVA and UVB rays. Apply it 20 minutes before heading out and reapply every 2 hours. Carry a small container of sweat-proof formula to reapply.
As for clothing, don’t run bare-chested or in a sports bra. Use sunscreen under your clothing, try sun protective gear or consider washing your clothes in SunGuard, which Runner’s World magazine says provides SPF30 protection that can last 20 washings
