Listen to The Roots, Kelly Clarkson take on ‘Hamilton’ songs in ‘Hamilton Mixtape’

WASHINGTON — The highly anticipated “Hamilton Mixtape,” a collection of covers and remixes of songs from the hit musical “Hamilton,” finally has a release date: Dec. 2. But you can listen to two of the tracks from the mixtape right now.

The first two songs available for listeners are a cover of “My Shot” by The Roots featuring Busta Rhymes, Joell Ortiz and Nate Ruess, and a cover of “It’s Quiet Uptown” by Kelly Clarkson.

The album touts 23 tracks, all remixes and covers of songs from the double-platinum official cast recording of the musical. The “Mixtape” will feature big-name artists including Chance the Rapper, Wiz Khalifa, Alicia Keys, Regina Spektor and more.

The Roots’ version of “My Shot” takes the song, which Alexander Hamilton sings early in the musical’s first act, even further into the realm of hip-hop, while Clarkson’s “It’s Quiet Uptown” cover shows off her powerful vocals, transforming the soft showtune into a pop ballad.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical’s creator, had been teasing the mixtape on his Twitter account for months, but Atlantic Records officially announced the album’s release date Friday. The album is now available for preorder.
