Police identify 16-year-old struck, killed by Amtrak train in Md.

WASHINGTON — A 16-year-old boy is dead after he was struck by an Amtrak train in Boyds, Maryland, Monday evening.

Montgomery County police say the 16-year-old was walking on the tracks with two other teens when he was hit at about 5:15 p.m.

Police have identified the teen as John Martin DeReggi Jr., of Boyds.

Several other people who weren’t on the train were evaluated on the scene and taken to a nearby hospital. They are all expected to be OK, police say.

Police are on the scene investigating what happened, and haven’t released any additional details at this time.

The investigation caused hourslong delays on MARC’s Brunswick Line. Trains were stopped at the Germantown station. MARC resumed service on the Brusnwick Line at about 7:30 p.m.

The Amtrak train was the Capitol Limited headed to Pittsburgh.
