Police: Arrest made after reported sex offense at Wheaton Metro

WASHINGTON – A D.C. man has been charged with assault and sex offense after reports of a sex offense at Wheaton Metro station Friday night.

Joshua Lamont Smith, 23, of Northeast, D.C. was charged with fourth degree sex offense, second degree assault and trespassing in Montgomery County, Maryland, Metro Transit Police said.

The charges stem from an alleged sex offense involving a female victim outside the Red Line station at around 10 p.m.

A Metro spokesman said the suspect ran into the station and disappeared into a train tunnel —prompting transit officials to suspend service for hours in order to search for an offender.

Police said Smith was apprehended Sunday morning.
