Kellogg rolls out root beer-flavored Pop-Tarts

WASHINGTON — Kellogg Co. is introducing two new soda-flavored Pop-Tarts: an A & W Root Beer-flavored version and a Crush Orange Soda-flavored one.

Both will be available beginning in May.

“The Frosted A & W Root Beer and Frosted Crush Orange varieties are so different from our fruity and dessert-type tarts, and this is our first beverage-inspired flavor,” said Angela Gusse, director of marketing.

Both sodas are owned by Dr Pepper Snapple Group. Kellogg did not reveal any terms for the Pop-Tart-soda mashup.

Pop-Tarts are big business for Kellogg. They were introduced in the 1960s: a plain version first, frosted varieties a few years later.

Kellogg CEO John Bryant told The Associated Press earlier this year that about one-quarter of Pop-Tart sales come in limited-time flavors.

Pop-Tarts remain popular with college students and younger adults, who respond to new offerings, Bryant said.

Pop-Tarts are part of Kellogg’s Morning Foods segment, which also includes breakfast cereals such as Fruit Loops and Frosted Flakes. The division’s sales fell 1.6 percent last year.

Kellogg had $13.5 billion in net sales last year, a 7.2 percent decline from 2014.
