Flying Dog Brewery turns 25

WASHINGTON — Frederick, Maryland-based Flying Dog Brewery is marking its 25th anniversary this year with a new beer called “Tropical Bitch,” a spin on its popular “Raging Bitch” Belgian-Style IPA, which it released for its 20th anniversary.

It has been a good 25 years for Flying Dog.

Flying Dog began life in Colorado, but moved all of its beer production to Frederick in 2007.

The brewery, which is expanding to a new facility in Frederick that will boost its capacity to up to 700,000 barrels of beer a year — seven times the capacity at its current Frederick facility, says in the past five years alone, sales have grown by 600 percent in its core mid-Atlantic market.

Flying Dog Brewmaster Matt Brophy started brewing beer when he was 17 years old.

“I heard Charlie Papazian, the godfather of home-brewing, interviewed on my local NPR affiliate and immediately became enthralled with the craft,” Brophy says.

“From that point on, I knew exactly what I would do for the rest of my life.”

“Tropical Bitch,” brewed with pineapple, passion fruit and mango, will be available until the end of March.
