Search for woman missing since July 2016 unearths remains

HANCOCK, Md. (AP) — Human remains have been found at a Maryland site where authorities have been looking for the body of a woman who disappeared a year ago.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports Washington County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carly Hose says it’s too early to tell if the remains found Wednesday are those of Laurie Hendershot, last seen in July 2016.

Hose didn’t reveal the exact site, but authorities had been searching a property off Old National Pike owned by Jerry Edwin Petry since Tuesday.

Petry was arrested last September in connection with the disappearance. In June, he was sentenced to 15 years on a weapons charge. Authorities offered to temporarily vacate his sentence if he told investigators where the body was, and there were no indications of foul play.
